Paris Saint-Germain secured their place in the Champions League final after overcoming Bayern Munich 5-4 on aggregate in the semi-finals. The first leg ended in a 5-4 victory for the Parisians, while the return match in Munich on May 6 concluded in a 1-1 draw.
“One step left to the trophy. See you in Budapest, Champions League,” wrote Matvey Safonov on his social media page.
The Russian goalkeeper becomes the first player from his country to reach the Champions League final twice. In last year’s final against Inter Milan (5-0), the 27-year-old Safonov was included in the matchday squad but did not take the field. He is the fifth Russian to win the Champions League, following Igor Dobrovolsky (Marseille, 1993), Vladimir But (Borussia Dortmund, 1997), Dmitri Alenichev (Porto, 2004), and Denis Cheryshev (Real Madrid, 2016).
This marks PSG’s third appearance in the Champions League final. Their opponents in the decisive match will be London’s Arsenal, who defeated Atletico Madrid in the semi-finals (1-1, 1-0).
The final between Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal will take place on May 30 at the Puskás Aréna in Budapest.
