Southampton secured their place in the English Championship play-off final with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Middlesbrough in the second leg of their semi-final tie.
The match at St Mary’s Stadium ended 1-1 after regular time. Ross Stewart put the hosts ahead, but Riley McGree equalized for Middlesbrough. With the aggregate score level at 1-1 (the first leg finished 0-0), the game moved into extra time. Shea Charles emerged as the hero, scoring the decisive goal in the 116th minute to send Southampton through.
The Saints will now face Hull City in the final, with a place in the Premier League at stake. The showpiece match is scheduled for May 23.
