Diego Epifanio, known as Epi, the head coach of Monbus Obradoiro, has asked for a moment of reflection after his team secured promotion to the Liga Endesa. With his own contract extension already confirmed, the Burgos-born tactician urged everyone involved to savor the achievement before diving into the demanding decisions that await for the upcoming season. Speaking on the latest episode of O Noso Basket, he said, “We deserve to enjoy a little of what we have experienced.”

Epi acknowledged that promotion naturally sparks immediate discussions about squad composition, budget adjustments, and the competitive leap required for the ACB. He admitted that both he and the club’s sporting directors, Raúl López and Héctor Galán, are already thinking about next season’s project. However, he stressed that the team must first cherish an extraordinary campaign.

The coach expressed that he felt comfortable and backed throughout the year. “At all times, I have always felt great support and, above all, great respect for my work,” he noted. That trust, he said, was crucial in steering the team through the most delicate moments of the season.

One such moment came early, when the team started with a 0-2 record. Epifanio recalled speaking with Raúl López and Héctor Galán to keep calm, defend the approach they had taken, and project a sense of calm outward. Subsequent victories—including an overtime win against Gipuzkoa Basket and a narrow triumph at the WiZink Center—helped reinforce the group’s belief.

Injuries later tested the squad, but Obradoiro responded with an extraordinary run. Epi highlighted that the team managed to win 25 out of 26 games, defeating almost every direct rival at the top of the standings and building a collective confidence that proved decisive in the direct promotion battle with Básquet Coruña.

The coach also had kind words for the fans, whom he described as a pillar of the project. He recalled sell-out crowds at Sar, the atmosphere in derbies, the away travel support, and especially the experience in Cantabria, where Obradoiro followers made the team feel at home.

Raúl López returned the praise to the coach. The club president credited Epi as key in uniting a squad of both sporting and human quality, managing roles effectively, and ensuring no one felt disconnected despite varying minutes. “He is honest, hardworking, and very loyal,” López summarized.

Looking ahead, Epifanio acknowledged that difficult decisions will come. He said that all current players could potentially perform in the ACB, but not all of them can stay together at Obradoiro. He expressed hope that those who remain will help the club succeed at the elite level, and that those who leave will find projects where they can showcase their talent and character.
